Eurasian Tree Sparrow

Look familiar? Well this bird should! You very likely have this bird or its close cousin, the House Sparrow in an area near you! The two look quite similar and occupy a similar ecological niche, though the house sparrows are more widespread and invasive and lack the cheek patch of the eurasian tree sparrow.

The first two pictures are examples from Singapore! This slightly-scraggly looking example was found in a residential area where we were staying with a friend.

The rest are from Japan, mostly in Ueno Park, if I recall! The third image is so cute! It was actually foraging but it makes it look like the bird was resting egg-like in the sun! The fourth is likely the clearest example of it. You can really see the cap and cheep patch, but the fifth in the reeds and the last two of it foraging are also great examples of the species!

I know sparrows are often viewed as pests, but I can’t help but have an affection for them all the same! They live beside humanity as best they can after we disrupted their habitat. The least we can do is not hate them for it!
